Jim McEwan is (voor whiskyprofessionals, kenners en liefhebbers) een icoon als Steve Jobs, Paul McCartney en Pelé. Opgegroeid in het kleine dorpje Bowmore op het "whisky-eiland" Islay, begon hij zijn carrière in 1963 op 15-jarige leeftijd als vatmaker in de Bowmore-distilleerderij. Dit ontwikkelde zich tot een ongekende carrière waarin Jim de whiskywereld als geen ander vorm zou geven en revolutionair zou veranderen.

Het wereldwijde succes van single malt whisky is onlosmakelijk met hem verbonden. Het hoogtepunt van zijn werk was de heropleving van de Bruichladdich-distilleerderij, tegenwoordig een van de meest innovatieve en gerespecteerde vertegenwoordigers van de whiskywereld.
